Shoot Out Results April 20, 2004

Seven models of digital cameras were tested with the same subject and lighting. We tested Canon G3, Canon Digital Rebel, Canon 10D, Nikon CoolPix 4500, Nikon D100, Nikon D70, Nikon D2H and Olympus E-1.

The following pages are an overview of the Shoot Out results. The images in this document were created in Photoshop 7.0 using the Contact Sheet II automation feature. The contact sheets were saved as JPEG's at maximum image quality. The actual images are available on CD-R for anyone wanting them. To get a copy of the disk contact Marvin Cline at mcline@erols.com.

Editor's Note: The images as originally prepared were too large for this website. They have been further compressed to fit, and have been converted from Adobe RGB to sRGB colorspace. The visual differences, if any, should be slight. For full information, get the disk!

The Canon 10D was accidentally set for +2/3 stop exposure compensation. It was set for Adobe RGB colorspace, and the Canon G3 was set for sRGB. The colorspace for the other cameras is not known.

All images were captured at f/5.6 with auto white balance. Shutter speed was varied in the multiple shots per camera. In some cases the ISO was varied. Full shooting parameters are available in the EXIF data of the images on the CD-R disk. Lighting was primarily from two photoflood lamps (one direct and one reflected) plus some low-intensity overhead lamps.

Here are the complete-image contact sheets.

The second set of pages shows a blow-up of the same area in each image at full camera resolution.

The photographs were taken by Skip Williams and the set was decorated by Dot Kuehn.
This summary was prepared by Marvin Cline.
