Nancy Ori is a master at working with light, composition, color, line, and texture. For decades, she has traveled throughout the world working on various photographic and video projects which have given her the opportunity to explore many popular and cherished places with her cameras. Photographing in the West Coast tradition of her long-time mentor, Ansel Adams, Nancy expresses her own interpretation of landscape and architecture. Over the past several years she has combined painterly and mixed media techniques into her photography. Using these techniques, she embraces and enhances the imperfections as well as the beauty in both her landscape and architectural images.

“When looking through the viewfinder, I am reminded of paintings that I love by artists such as Turner, Constable, Van Gogh, and others including the Impressionists. They inspire me to add texture and color to give to my images an emotional quality and perhaps a feeling of awe of nature. They are timeless and could have been taken out of a 17th century Dutch or English playbook full of romance with a strong emphasis on light and atmosphere to spark the imagination. I previsualize the painterly image at the time of capture and continue those thoughts through the use of post processing techniques.”

Nancy’s subject matter varies widely, from ancient architecture to landscape scenes and photographs of objects in still life compositions. Natural subjects like trees, mountains, streams, and waterfalls can imply deeper meaning and ancient stories about the scene. The use of texture creates mood and mystery. Her scenes can appear idyllic or conjure fantasy. Depending on the viewer’s interpretation, the work can also evoke the idea of a peaceful and gentle scene that raises a sentimental understanding of what we are losing as our world changes. Her architectural images create feelings of nostalgia for the past and perhaps hope for the future with appreciation of the timeless endurance of her architectural subjects.

Nancy’s post processing techniques do not hide the subject, instead they combine the reality of the scene with a canvas-like texture while adding color and a grittiness to support the mystery and create hard and soft edges. The final photograph has realistic detail and yet a sensual and expressive quality that balances nicely within her picturesque atmospheres.

Her work has been widely collected and exhibited throughout the globe and is in numerous museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. She has been chosen to participate in numerous grant projects and important fine art exhibitions including the NJ Fine Arts Annual. Along with exhibiting her own work, Nancy has curated and juried hundreds of exhibits at a wide variety of venues internationally.
